Diapasão - Opus 1 2006 (Brasil, Symphonic Prog)

This band is rooted in 2002 when 17 year old keyboard player Rodrigo Lana starts to write compositions on his piano, he is thinking of a future as a professional musician. To realise a musical project he begins to search for musicians, eventually Rodrigo forms a trio with two other musicians in 2004. First bass - and classical guitar player Gustavo Ameral, they attented the same music school in Belo Horizonte. Then drummer Moreira, he and Rodrigo know each other from the band Mestiço in which Rodrigo is also involved. He succeeds to convince Gustavo to join Rodrigo in his new musical project. The name of his band becomes Diapasao, it's derived from a small metallic object that is used to tune instruments and voices. In May 2005 they start the recordings for their first album in a studio in Belo Horizonte but it lasts until November 2006 before Diapasao finally releases their first album entitled Opus 1 on the label Masque records. Diapasao their music is an often dynamic and bombastic keyboard driven blend of classical, symphonic prog and jazz with strong hints from ELP featuring exciting work on the Grand piano (lots of virtuosic solo parts), organ, harpsichord and synthesizers along wonderful contributions on classical guitar, violin and cello.

Quella Vecchia Locanda - Same 1972 (Italy, Rock Progressivo)

QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA is a great Italian prog band of the historic scene, formed in Rome in the early seventies. QVL plays a complex music with a lot of instrumental combinations, beautiful melodies and a very high sophistication. Close to KING CRIMSON.

QVL released two albums which are both considered essential releases from that particular scene. The first album is still regarded as a classic in its field, with an original fusion of classical influences and the use of flute and electric violin in evidence. QVL was fairly typical of the style, especially on their second album, "Il Tempo Della Goia", which ranks as one of the finest examples of classical, pastoral Italian symphonic along the lines of PFM, CELESTE, ALUSA FALLAX or LOCANDA DELLE FATE. The group sadly disbanded soon after the second album, leaving us with two more italian progressive gems, both with beautiful covers. Two of the most looked records of Italy!!!

- Giorgio Giorgi / lead vocals, flute, piccolo
- Raimondo Maria Cocco / electric, acoustic & 12 string guitars, vocals
- Massimo Roselli / piano, organ, Mellotron, Moog, electronic zither, spinet, vocals
- Donald Lax / electric & acoustic violins
- Romualdo Coletta / bass, frequency generator
- Patrick Traina / drums, percussion

Genco Puro & Co - Area di servizio 1972 (Italy, Rock Progressivo)

Genco Puro & Co. was really a show name for a solo artist, one Riccardo Pirolli from Sicily. After releasing a few singles in the '60s he recorded one full length studio album in 1972 with the assistance of Franco Battiato and other unnamed musicians. Battiato's full role is not certain, but the two were friends, Battiato sang on two tracks, and according to ItalianProg.com he may have written seven of the album's twelve songs under the ghost name Ed De Joy. Pirolli was a guest on Battiato's "Fetus" album and both were label mates on the Bla Bla label. Another noted guest on this album is Capsicum Red/I Pooh's Bruno "Red" Canzian.

The Genco Puro album is certainly a part of Italian rock history. It features short pop songs with traditional, strong Italian melodies accented with progressive tendencies. You will hear songs built on acoustic guitars and keyboards, with piano, Moog, sound effects, and orchestrations. Pirolli ended up working as a sound engineer and arranger. While not a progressive masterpiece it is certainly of interest to RPI fans and especially to the fans of Franco Battiato.

Leo Nero - Vero 1977 (Rock Progressivo Italiano)

After the breakup of IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO in 1973, keyboardist Gianni Leone pursued a solo career under the name of LEO NERO. This resulted in two albums: the progressive "Vero" in 1977, and synth-pop-oriented "Monitor" in 1980.

Young keyboardist extraordinaire and mastermind behind Il Balletto di Bronzo's seminal 1972 work "Ys," Gianni Leone tried to pick up the pieces after the band imploded following the success of "Ys" and the resulting excesses. Intact for a short time as a duo, Leone and Balletto drummer Gianchi Stringa played live a few times in 1973, with Leone performing all the instrumental parts on his keyboards. This experience laid the groundwork for his solo career, for which he changed his moniker to Leo Nero.

Leone composed the songs for "Vero" in 1974, and most of the tracks were recorded in New York in 1975. The album wasn't released until 1977. As expected, the album is keyboard oriented, and Leone plays all the instruments. Although the album is nowhere near the magical frenetic contortions of "Ys," nevertheless this is a very good album, one that should please fans of the genre. "Vero" is a concept album, centered on the feelings of loneliness and fear that Leone felt after the dissolution of Il Balletto di Bronzo. The entire album is filled with a melodic melancholy that never quite lifts. The compositions on the first half are in a more singer-songwriter style and could almost be considered as multiple parts of a longer work; in fact, several themes are repeated throughout the album. The second half is the more progressive part, with songs such as "Tastieri Isteriche," "Il Castello," "Una Gabbia Per Me," and "La Discesa Nel Cervello" that hearken back at least in spirit to "Ys," although certainly not reaching the same level.

After the release of "Vero," Leone veered in a commercial synth-pop direction. His second album, 1980's "Monitor," is frankly of little interest to progressive fans. (His backing band for part of that album was called Optical Band, which gives the title to one of the pieces he continues to perform, "Optical Surf Beat.") He continued in this vein throughout the 1980s (as evidenced by some demos which were recently released).

However, in the 1990s Leone reentered the progressive scene, first by contributing to the wonderful album by DIVAE (1995) and then by reforming Il Balletto di Bronzo (himself being the only returning 1970s member, using the rhythm section from Divae). The 1996 live album from the reformed Balletto entitled "Trys" features not only the entire "Ys" album, but also several of the best Leo Nero pieces as well, this time performed with the band. In fact, the band continues today to play liberally from the Leone repertoire, whether from Leo Nero or Il Balletto di Bronzo. Thus the past and future of Leo Nero and Il Balletto di Bronzo are intertwined, both with the genius of Gianni Leone at the center.
