In C (1964) é talvez a obra mais conhecida de Riley. Publico em outra ocasião, no momento quero que vocês curtam este maravilhoso álbum "A Rainbow in Curved Air". Que inclusive para efeto de curiosidade inspirou Pete Townshend em "Won't Get Fooled Again" e "Baba O'Riley", como mencionado no titulo da ultima canção.
Ele tem influenciado o trabalho de John Adams, Robert Carnevale e Philip Glass.
Sua forma foi uma inovação: a peça é composta de 53 módulos separados de aproximadamente uma medida cada um, cada um contendo um padrão musical diferente, mas cada um, como o título indica, no tom de C.
Na década de 1950 ele já estava trabalhando com laços de fita, uma tecnologia então na sua infância, e ele continuou manipulando fitas para efeito musical, tanto em estúdio e em performance ao vivo, ao longo de sua carreira. Compôs em apenas entonação, bem como peças microtonais.
Riley colaboradorou com Rova Saxophone Quartet, Pauline Oliveros, the ARTE Quartett e the Kronos Quartet.
