R-U Kaiser - Ocelos (2007) (Symphonic Prog) (Chile)

The embryonic period of R-U KAISER (a German visionary in the early Seventies) began in the early 2000s as a shared idea of drummer Oscar Arias and singer/keyboardist Pilar Núñez. Later on, Mario Pizarro "Morus" makes his entrante as the main keyboardsman, and so do bassist Lino Oré and guitarist Pablo Lizana. All this took place in Antofagasta. The idea of a symphonic rock ensemble was increasingly enhanced by the band with the incorporation of members on flute, violin, cello, classical guitar, etc. This particular enterprise was doomed to be inconsistent, but it helped the band to mature its vision as it moved to Santiago, in order to expand its dissemination opportunities. Their music reamined well rooted in the symphonic prog trend with its "constrained" instrumentation of guitar-bass-drums-2 keyboards. With the entrance of Bárbara Wilson as a second female singer (a contralto who complements Pilar's soprano range) and Pablo doubling on guitar and bass, R-U KAISER finally achieved the line-up set to record their debut concept-album "Ocelos", which has been released by Watcher Records in November 2007. The recording sessions were intermittent, starting in 2006 and finishing it in half 2007; meanwhile, the band had been introducing their "Ocelos" material to audiences in various concerts. The band attained a loyal following in the last two years.
- Highly recommended to lovers of symphonic prog, the music of R-U KAISER reveals influences from classic WAKEMAN, UK, GLASS HAMMER, and it also bears relative similarities to their compatriots of ENTRANCE and MATRAZ.

Igra Staklenih Perli - same (1979) (Psychedelic/Space Rock) (Yugoslavia)

Igra Staklenih Perli, the ultimate ex-Yugoslavian space/psychedelic rock band, was formed in 1976 in Belgrade, Serbia, having been named after the famous novel by Hermann Hesse - "Das Glasperlenspiel" (The Glass Beads Game). The original line-up consisted of: Zoran Lakic (keyboards), Vojkan Rakic (guitar), Predrag Vukovic (percussions) and Drasko Nikodijevic (bass & vocals). In late 1977 Dragan Soc joined the band as drummer while they played live concerts at Belgrade clubs, preparing to start recording their first album, which they did in mid 1978. Upon its release the next year, the band gained reputation for elaborated visual stage effects and light show directed by their friend Goran Cvetic. Nikodijevic was replaced by rock journalist Slobodan Trbojevic on bass prior to recording the second album in late 1979. After its release in 1980 the guitarist Ivan Pajevic replaced Rakic and Nikodijevic was back on bass, but shortly the band ceased to exist. Nikodijevic and Rakic later formed post-punk/neo-psych White Rabbit Band but in late 1980s moved to USA where they continued under the name White Rabbit Cult. The remaining members together with German publisher Thomas Werner released at the beginning of 1990s three albums of ISP old live material and album outtakes for the German-based label Kalemegdan Disk.

Igra Staklenih Perli labelled their music style as "stream of consciousness music". Their both studio albums, the first eponymous "Igra Staklenih Perli" from 1979 and the second "Vrt Svetlosti" from 1980, are pretty similar in sound and resemble the style from early PINK FLOYD and HAWKWIND psychedelia, to German kraut-rock (notably CAN and TANGERINE DREAM), to HILLAGE-era GONG among many. Interesting music effort especially considering the fact it was the new wave boom period when they tried to pursue a quite different music philosophy.

Recommended listen to any devoted prog fan. Since all their albums were issued on vinyl format it might be difficult task to find them, but Kalemegdan Disk may be a good starting address.

Pell Mell - Marburg (Germany, 1972) (Symphonic Prog)

Not to be confused with a 1980s American band of the same name, Pell Mell was a symphonic band from Marburg, Germany (Marburg is also the name of the debut album). The band was formed in 1971 by keyboard player Otto Pusch, bass player Jorg Gotzfried, Rudolf Schon on vocals, recorder, and guitar, drummer Mitch Kniesmeijer, and Thomas Schmitt on violin, guitar, and vocals.

The first album is characterized by a rough edge, especially in the vocals. Subsequent albums would smooth out the edges. However, there are aspects reminiscent of Hawkwind, HP Lovecraft, The Nice, and even ELP. Mellotron and classical themes are abundant. It also should be pleasing to fans Krautrock.

Over the next releases they would explore the realm of Mike Oldfield, and then settle into keyboard dominated symphonic. The old psychedelic sounds completely gone. Much of the music is considered some of the best German symphonic ever recorded.

The usual lineup changes occurred over time, and the band began to disintegrate after 1978's "Only a Star." Thomas Schmitt formed the '80s style rock band Skyrider, with former band mate Otto Pusch. They released one self-titled album, and then took back the name Pell Mell. This incarnation released "Moldau" in 1981. However, the old magic was gone, and that is where the Pell Mell story ends. The Zoo - Presents Chocolate Moose (1968)

Esse álbum, cuja edição original é raríssima e disputada por colecionadores de todo mundo, é um dos mais interessantes do underground californiano no final da década de 60. Com faixas curtas, ao estilo garageiro (Chocolate Moose, Try me, Ai't Nobody), o álbum é legal do início ao fim, indo da psicodelia básica ao blues-rock.
Foi produzido em 1968 pelo compositor Ed Cobb e a banda trazia na formação os futuros produtores musicais Mike Flicker na bateria e Howard Leese na guitarra. Eles não lançaram mais nenhum outro álbum depois deste.

Synansthesia (1969)

Eles ficaram juntos por pouco mais de um ano, mas deixaram para a posteridade um álbum que ficou lendário. Trata-se do trio londrino Synanthesia, formado por Dennis Homes (vibrafone, violão, vocais), Jim Fraser (saxofone, flauta, oboé) e Les Cook (violão, bongo, violino, bandolim, vocais). Os caras faziam uma inusitada mistura de folk celta com psicodelia, jazz, progressivo... tudo em versões acústicas maravilhosamente criadas num álbum que só levou dois dias para ser gravado. Entre canções de beleza etérea (Minerva, Rolling and tumbling, Just as the curtain finally falls) e viagens mais audaciosas (Morpheus, Mneosyne), a banda conseguiu um resultado antológico.

Piirpauke - same (1975)

Piirpauke é uma banda finlandesa que combina folk e jazz com maestria. A banda foi fundada pelo Sakari Kukko em 1974 e ao longo dos anos, uma série de músicos de diversos países têm passado pela banda.
Algumas das suas mais famosas canções incluem Konevitsan kirkonkellot, Soi vienosti murheeni soitto e Imala Maika. A banda já excursionou por todo o mundo e tem tocado em grandes festivais, tais como Provinssirock, Ruisrock e Pori Jazz na Finlândia. Altamente recomendado!

Eden's Children (1968)

Banda obscura - e surpreendente - de Boston, formada por Richard "Sham" Schamach (guitara e vocais), Larry Kiley (baixo) e Jimmy Sturman (bateria). Os caras lançaram dois álbuns no final dos anos 60, esse é o primeiro deles. Psicodelia com alguma influência do Cream, mas com a sonoridade das bandas de garagem norte-americanas. Um álbum cultuado por colecionadores, como ótimas faixas, como "Knocked out", "Goodbye Girl", "Stone Fox", que recebeu uma crítica absurdamente injusta do Joe Viglione no Allmusic.com (parece que ele tem algum problema pessoal com a banda), mas que é adorado por quem realmente entende de rock psicodélico.

Na verdade estava pensando em fazer esta postagem há algum tempo, mas acabo por esquecer deste maravilhoso disco, até que a Laís da comunidade Sábado som fez a postagem na comuna, lembre do disco e solicitei a ajuda da minha incansável amiga Isabel que fez o upload para mim, já que me encontro impossibilitada de faze-lo por motivos técnicos. Estou, inclusive, abduzindo as informações da Laís na postagem do orkut. Onde ela diz: Pholas Dactylus é um sexteto (dois teclados, guitarra, baixo, bateria e voz solista). Tem o seu foco nas partes vocais, dado que os textos, visionários e decididamente psicodélicos, são em prática um longo poema que Paolo Carelli não canta, mas declama de maneira enfática e teatral. Uma autêntica viagem mental, que reclama os Trip alucinogénos do acid-rock californiano, o "Concerto" dos Pholas se desenvolve numa sucessão de pontos e atmosferas que variam dos free-jazz ingleses mais inovativos numa improvisação envolvente e quase dark garantida pelos duplos teclados de Maurizio Pancotti e Valentino Galbusera.

Acho que já deu pra perceber o quanto é difícil classificar essa banda, formada por militares americanos servindo em base na Alemanha, que se apresentava vestida de monge...

Black Monk Time, gravado no final de 1965, traz faixas com melodia minimalista e letras dadaístas, com um estranho banjo elétrico fazendo contraponto à guitarra e ao órgão. A primeira faixa traz o vocalista Gary Burger berrando coisas como "Why do you kill all those kids over there in Vietnam? Mad Vietcong! My brother died in Vietnam", e a maluquice segue em outros petardos como "I hate you", "Shut Up" e "Drunken Maria". Sim, você não leu errado, isso foi gravado em 1965!!!!

Não é a toa que a banda tem admiradores confessos como Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra e Beastie Boys. Só ouvindo pra acreditar.

Horses - Horses (1969)

Mais uma jóia perdida da era psicodélica, Horses foi uma banda de curta duração (1968-70) formada em San Francisco que só lançou um álbum, cujo original hoje é disputadíssimo por colecionadores. A banda tinha produção de John Carter e Tim Gilbert (responsáveis pelos maravilhosos arranjos do Strawberry Alarm Clock) e era empresariada pelo lendário DJ de San Francisco David Diamond (que inha o programa mais cool da cena psicodélica californiana). O álbum é bem variado, trazendo faixas muito boas como "Freight Train", "Class of 69" ou "cheyenne", numa ótima mistura de psicodelia, folk, blues, country e pop.

Esses caras vieram de Bremen (sul de Hamburgo) e sua estréia foi produzida por Petersen (ex-Ikarus), dando-lhes um típico som instrumental jazz-rock da época.

In 1970, Peter Michael Hamel founded BETWEEN, an international band specialised in improvisational / « ethnic » rock music. The name Between comes from the fact that Hamel's music is originaly "in-between", always making a combination between "popular music" and "serious music". The classical musician Robert Eliscu (born American), responsible of oboe parts in POPOL VUH can be considered as the major member of the musical tribe next to Peter Michael Hamel. With a small community of six members, BETWEEN recorded its first album “Einstieg” in 1971. It directly announces the musical orientation to come, timeless ethnic rock compositions, mixing together several acoustic instruments (bongo, flute…) to folk and jazz. “And the waters openened” recorded in 1973 carries on improvisations and acoustic exploration, played in a rather “spacey” rock atmosphere, sometimes closed to krautrock, weird flavour. “Dharana” (1974) is seen as a classic album and marks a new step in the launch of “world” music. It contains long epic, acoustic pieces with a few minimalist, oriental accents. “Hesse Between Music” (1975) is a concept album, always improvised, featuring Indian scales and recitation. During and after BETWEEN’s career, the front man Peter Michael Hamel has developed the possibilities of spiritual effects of music on mind thanks to a great variety of solo albums in search of East meets West.
